Senators Tim Kaine and Angus King Visit Lebanon
A delegation from the U.S. Senate visited Lebanon today as part of a regional tour. The delegation included Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Angus King (I-ME). The delegation met with President Michel Sleiman, Prime Minister Tammam Salam, Lebanese Armed Forces Commander Jean Kahwagi, UNHCR Representative Ninette Kelley, and NGO representatives. The visit focused on U.S. humanitarian assistance to Lebanon to deal with the influx of refugees from Syria, which currently stands at over $340 million. The delegation welcomed Lebanon's formation of a new government subject to the confidence of parliament and reaffirmed U.S. support to Lebanon to support the prosperity, security, and sovereignty of the state.
