SENATORS LIEBERMAN, MCCAIN, GRAHAM PRAISE NEW U.S. SYRIA SANCTIONS AGAINST HEZBOLLAH, URGE EU TO FOLLOW

09.13.12

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Senators Joe Lieberman (I-CT), John McCain (R-AZ), and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) issued the following statement praising the new U.S. Syria sanctions against Hezbollah and urging the EU to follow:

"The Treasury Department's sanctioning of Hezbollah's top leader, Hassan Nasrallah, for supporting the Syrian regime is long overdue, but very much welcome and important. The world must know that Hezbollah, and Nasrallah personally, are Bashar al Assad's active accomplices in the escalating campaign of slaughter in Syria, and they must be held accountable for their direct and deep involvement in the crimes being committed there.

"We also strongly urge the European Union to join the United States in sanctioning Hezbollah for facilitating human rights abuses in Syria, and encourage the Obama Administration to make available the necessary intelligence to our European allies that demonstrates Hezbollah's complicity in the killing. Hezbollah should not be allowed to raise funds on European soil that it can then use to bolster Bashar al Assad in the mass murder of the Syrian people."
