Bell Helicopter has been awarded a USD18.9 million contract to supply Lebanon with three additional UH-1H Huey II utility helicopters, the US Department of Defense (DoD) announced on 16 March.

Under the contract, awarded the previous day, the helicopters will be delivered by 14 March 2017.

Once in service, the Huey IIs will join six other such platforms delivered in 2012. These additional helicopters are part of an order for 18 Huey II helicopters for Lebanon approved by the US Department of State in September 2014. The total contract is valued at USD180 million, including parts, support, and training.

According to the US Defense Security Co-operation Agency, which first announced the state department approval, the sale will give Lebanon mobility capabilities needed to undertake internal security missions, to enforce the United Nation's Security Council Resolutions 1559 (to maintain the sovereignty of its borders) and 1701 (the disarmament of all armed groups in the country), and to tackle terrorist threats.

As well as augmenting the six Huey IIs Lebanon already fields, these additional platforms will help replace 18 UH-1H Huey platforms in service since 1999. The Huey II differs from the standard model helicopter in being fitted with improved and updated features, including a more powerful engine, new dynamic parts (such as rotors, transmissions, and gearboxes), new wiring, and an optional 'glass' cockpit. The surplus airframes have also been 'zero-timed'.

While the UH-1H was designed as a troop transport and support helicopter, it has been pressed into service by Lebanon as a bomber. For this role they were fitted with extended undercarriage skids and improvised bomb racks for the delivery of 250 kg (550 lb) and 400 kg (880 lb) bombs, reportedly achieving a good degree of accuracy from a hover at altitude.

Further to its Huey-type platforms, the Lebanese Air Force's rotary-winged fleet includes eight Aerospatiale SA342L Gazelles, 10 Eurocopter SA 330 Super Pumas, one AgustaWestland AW139, three Sikorsky S-61 Sea Kings, and four Robinson R44 Raven IIs.
