U.S. Ambassador Meets with President Sleiman

October 24, 2012U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Maura Connelly met with Lebanese President Michel Sleiman today. The President and Ambassador discussed the U.S.-Lebanese bilateral relationship as well as the political and security situation in Lebanon and regional events.
The Ambassador reiterated the support of the United States for President Sleiman and other leaders as they seek to build an effective government and take the necessary next steps in the wake of the October 19 assassination of Major General Wissam al-Hassan.
She assured President Sleiman that the United States views this as an internal Lebanese matter and will not prejudge the outcomes of these efforts. She noted the concerns shared by the U.S. and international community regarding the potential for instability and the creation of any political vacuum. She relayed Washington's hope that all parties will exercise restraint and respect for Lebanon's security and stability.
The Ambassador renewed the commitment of the United States to a stable, sovereign and independent Lebanon.
